The digital revolution is changing the way we park in urban areas. Indeed, various technological developments will transform cities in coming years, from parking apps and parking-spot detection systems to autonomous vehicle parking. While such services offer numerous opportunities for improving the management of vehicle traffic, they also threaten to encourage the “rebound effect” of greater vehicle use.
Many established companies and start-ups are planning to introduce digital services related to parking. Yet city planners often lack a basis for assessing these services, which impairs associated decision-making. As part of this project, researchers will develop a systematic overview of technological developments and digital trends related to vehicle parking. The services thus identified will then be assessed with a view to the following question: How do they support the transformation of the transport sector toward greater sustainability in urban areas? The study is being carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO).
