Transforming Urban Logistics

  • Project Duration: 12/2017 - 09/2019

Urban freight is growing rapidly. How can its impact on the climate and the quality of life in cities be minimized?

The negative environmental impacts and the growing demand for road space require an efficient and climate-friendly organization of urban freight. It is to be expected that current trends such as digitalisation, electrification or the use of cargo bicycles will not suffice. However, as local communities oftentimes lack data, the design of appropriate policy measures faces high levels of uncertainty.

Agora Verkehrswende investigates how cities can access and use data on urban deliveries, build up effective stakeholder processes and design measures to bring the needs of the freight industry in line with ambitious policy goals.

It is already clear that in order to do this, the view must be broadened beyond the Courier, Express, and Parcel industry, which is now frequently mentioned in the media. Exemplary surveys by the University of Wuppertal - together with the consulting company HWH the contractor for this project - show that only five percent of all cargo vehicles in the old town of Düsseldorf belong to this rapidly growing, but still numerically small segment.
