At the recent COP26 in Glasgow, India set ambitious targets for the transport sector and climate protection in general: India intends to become climate-neutral by 2070 and to phase out the registration of new combustion vehicles by 2040. These plans need now to be implemented, and the Indian governments on national and state level have already initiated a number of new policies.

In this online event, we want to talk about the current situation in the Indian transport sector and about future decarbonization strategies. How can the transformation succeed in a country with such a highly fragmented transport sector and large population? Our guests will share their first-hand experiences, addressing current policy instruments and technical innovations. They will also discuss with us which current developments in India are relevant for Germany.

One of our speakers is Vanchhit Johri, who is currently a German Chancellor Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and is conducting research with Agora Verkehrswende. His main focus is research on charging infrastructure. Before moving to Germany, Vanchhit Johri was working for the electrification of the delivery fleet in India since 2019. He has also worked in the Indian electric micro-mobility industry in partnerships and finance. He began his career in 2012 with the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India.

Our other speaker will be Amit Bhatt. He is the Managing Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) for India, based in New Delhi. He has over 20 years of experience in transportation, urban development, and management. Before joining ICCT, Amit was Executive Director for Integrated Transport at World Resources Institute (WRI) India for 12 years. Prior to the WRI, he worked with the Urban Mass Transit Company, India’s leading urban transport consultancy, and with Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi.

The event will be hosted by Christian Hochfeld, Executive Director of Agora Verkehrswende.
