Owen  Mwaura

Owen Mwaura is a doctoral researcher, focusing on transportation planning in Africa, with a goal to enhance understanding of informal transport network design. His work encompasses areas inclusing transport decarbonization, the socio-economic impact of transport infrastructure development, and renewable energy potential.

Previously, he has worked as a transportation planner in Nairobi, a GIS analyst in renewable energy in South Africa, and as an Assistant Lecturer in the civil engineering department. For the work on his PhD, Owen has been awarded the Mastercard Scholar Fund as well the Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship. His primary focus is understanding travel behavior, particularly crucial for addressing complex urban transport challenges in Africa.

What project are you working on – and what goals do you want to achieve with it?

I'm currently focused on enhancing paratransit associations by strengthening their operational strategies and fostering sustainable business models. This initiative aims to address any inefficiencies identified within the system.

What's an important take-away from the fellowship for your work?

Mindset shifts play a crucial role in any form of transformation – whether it's in governance, challenging the status quo, altering social norms, or fostering acceptance of change.

What was the most surprising insight for you?

Sustainable Transport transformation presents a significant challenge in Germany. However, on the flip side, Africa possesses the potential to execute it more effectively and sustainably. This presents a unique opportunity for fostering economic growth, the low-hanging fruits driven by the conducive conditions in place. Acting swiftly enough to stay ahead of the curve is crucial for capitalizing on this potential.
