How will networked and autonomous vehicles affect energy consumption? Discussion of this topic has only just begun. Recent studies have emphasized that autonomous vehicles can be more efficient than their conventional counterparts. However, little attention has been devoted to quantifying the additional energy demand required to network autonomous vehicles with each other, to road infrastructure, and with data platforms.
When the rubber meets the road, will autonomous vehicles be more efficient? Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, we take a closer look at the energy savings potential offered by autonomous vehicles – as well as the attendant challenges – with the aim of providing stakeholders with an improved basis for making decisions.
